Hello on the 19th March 2025 I spent about half an hour documenting the current buses coming in and out of Birkenhead Bus Station here in Merseyside on the Wirral! The bus station is operated and owned by Mersey Travel, there are 3 main bus stations these are; Birkenhead, Liverpool ONE & Queen Square Bus Stations.

Where starting with this, Wright Gemini 2 Hybrid which was introduced back in 2013 by Arriva North West and are based at Birkenhead Depot on Laird Street. I’m not a huge fan of these buses as they have been in service now for 12 Years and I feel they’re starting to show their age!
Recently Arriva alongside the Mayor of Liverpool Steve Rotherham introduced a batch of 52 Single decker Enviro 200 MMC Buses with the latest technology including USB C/A, WiFi & Onboard Announcements these are part of a wider project to bring the buss around the LCR back into public ownership for the first time in 40 years!

In 2012, First Group announced they would be leaving the Wirral and selling off there Rock Ferry depot near Birkenhead to Stagecoach which is another large operator based here in Merseyside which will soon be brought back into public ownership! Stagecoach recently as 2023 introduced a batch of brand new Enviro 400 MMC Buses to use on there X1/1 Services to & from Chester to Liverpool City Centre

Above is an example from 2017 registered YX67 VCY Recently been repainted into Stagecoach’s current livery moving away from its original Gold livery for the routes 471/472 which operate between Liverpool & Heswall via Pensby & Irby. I would like to do a written review of these journeys as they’re operated by both Arriva & Stagecoach.
These service where originally operated by First Bus under the 71/72 Routes which got renumbered to 472/1 when the bus partnership with Mersey Travel was introduced some years ago! We go back now to Arriva Buses with the 437 route towards West Kirby which also has the 407 service which only served as far as Moreton at one point!

For my final photo of this post, we head back to Stagecoach with route 38, which runs to West Kirby albeit with a slightly different route to that of the 407/437 Operated by Arriva. Today the route was being used by 2 different Enviro 400 models, one being a Scania and the other a more modern Enviro 400 MMC seen leaving Birkenhead

But that will be all for this first instalment where I’ll be visiting various bus stations and spending about half an hour photographing various buses and bus routes! I also plan to attend different bus events that happen through out the year and document them here on my blog!
