I was pleasantly surprised to find a refurbished Class 170 at Liverpool Lime Street on Tuesday this week just gone. This was during my challenge to ride every class of train that operates in Merseyside. I rather liked the updated interior however the train I was on was rather busy.

The seats compared to newer stock were rather comfortable, the space still felt rather cramped due to the design of the class 170 as I’ve always felt they are rather cramped and not the most spacious of trains. One of the new features I noticed were the Sockets on the tables them selves.

They also feature USB A & USB C as well as the standard wall socket. Over all I was quite excited to try out the new interior and I look forward to exploring their network with my every station series in the future. Another feature that has been updated is the disabled toilet too! So I was happy to see that it got some love too.

I’m not a huge fan of the Class 170s in general however it is nice to see them being upgraded with new interiors and better facilities like the chance to be able to charge your phone as well whilst traveling. The older interior was from London Midland however is now operated with EMR, I also like the purple livery and the pride branding along the side of this unit being 170501.

I also noticed that the Doors on these units have also been repainted to match the EMR branding with the dark purple, it just stands out compared to other operators like TfW and Northern with their bland White trains! It’ll be nice to see these interiors rolled out onto the rest of the fleet as well.

I also heard that the Cross Country Class 170 trains are also being refurbished to a similar standard and I would love to check those out sometime as well to compare the two and see who’s done it better. I hope that you like these little updates reviewing different units or refurbed units to!
