At the time of writing this post, we are on track to complete the entire Merseyrail network once more. I have visited stations between Headbolt Lane, Kirkdale, Southport, and Ormskirk, as well as the Wirral Lines like New Brighton and West Kirby. In this post, we explore stations towards Chester, including the somewhat awkward Capenhurst station, our first station being Liverpool James Street.

As you can see, we are beginning today’s adventure underground in the City Centre of Liverpool. James Street was the original terminus of the Mersey Railway until it was extended to Liverpool Central’s low-level platforms, which are now used for the Northern lines towards Southport, Hunts Cross, Ormskirk, and Headbolt Lane. I have ridden the section between James Street and Liverpool Central when I took the 507/8 Tours a few years ago.

Starting from James Street, we make our way to our first station, Green Lane, which is probably one of my favourite Underground stations on the network. Despite being underground, you can also see daylight, which reminds me of the modern-day Conway Park station. Green Lane was originally the terminus until it was extended to Rock Ferry. From Green Lane, we head to Birkenhead Central by bus.

From Birkenhead Central, I travel to Hamilton Square, another Underground Station that opened the same year as James Street station in 1889 under the Mersey Railway. Hamilton Square was the first to have hydraulically operated lifts. The tower of Hamilton Square was used to assist in moving the escalators up and down from the platforms. James Street station also had a very similar building, which was destroyed in World War II.

I took the 410 Bus from Hamilton Square to Bebington Station, where I caught the train to Rock Ferry. This line has approximately 14/15 stations, and I visited all of them except Chester, as it was getting late in the evening. Merseyrail operates like a metro service with four trains per hour, making it quite easy to visit these stations in quick succession.

The aim of these posts is to share photos of every station I have visited and exited in the United Kingdom. I have visited a total of 493 stations, but unfortunately, I have lost many of the photos and videos from them. In this post, I am leaving Rock Ferry Station to head up the line to Bromborough Rake.

I walked from Bromborough Rake to Bromborough station and took the train to Spital. This line is rich in history, with a disused railway running alongside it. Originally built by the Great Western Railway, it had stations towards Woodside, which no longer exist. After reaching Spital, we returned up the line towards Port Sunlight.

From Spital, I head to Eastham Rake, the last station before Hooton, where you can change for services to Ellesmere Port and then onward to Helsby. I recently visited Ince & Elton Station, which I had been trying to visit for quite a while, but Northern tends to cancel the services, which is rather annoying. However, from Eastham Rake Station, we head to Port Sunlight.

We departed from Port Sunlight and made our way to Bache Station before reaching our final stop, Capenhurst. As it was approaching evening, I decided to return to the town centre before heading home. I have a fondness for Capenhurst; I recall visiting the station in September 2024 while pursuing the 507 Wirral tour. This was prior to the announcement of a Northern line tour scheduled for November.

Finally, Capenhurst Station, today’s awkward station with only a half-hourly service compared to the rest of the network. From here, I headed back to Birkenhead before making my way home. We are also getting close to our first 100 stations that I have managed to write about, which is pretty epic. After this, I was heading to Glasgow, and there are four posts coming from there.

Why does Capenhurst get a reduced service? Seems odd.

I think it’s due to the tight turnaround at Chester not really sure tbh!

Yeah I’m not sure. It’s been like that for many years.
