In this post, I’ve compiled a list of seven stations from each line operating on Merseyrail to identify the least used station overall. Here’s a hint: it’s on the Wirral line and was also the least used station on Merseyrail during the 2016/17 period, according to that data. I rather enjoy making these little interesting posts cause you get a glimpse into my brain!

The first station we will examine is Wallasey Village, the first of two stations on the branch line towards New Brighton station. Wallasey Village originally opened as Leasowe Road in 1907 and was renamed Wallasey Village around the time of the electrification in 1938. The passenger statistics for this station are 469,056, which equates to approximately 1,285 passengers per day if calculated over 365 days.

Wallasey Village Station – 469,056

Our next station in this post is Rice Lane on the Northern line, located between Kirkdale and Headbolt Lane. It opened in 2023 when the line was extended, but without a third rail, it now uses Class 777/1 Battery Units by Stadler. The statistics for this station are 422,834 passengers annually. Dividing that by 365 days gives an average of 1,159 passengers per day. This is slightly less than Wallasey Village but not the overall least used station on Merseyrail.

Rice Lane Station – 422,834
Manor Road Station – 293,490

Our next station is Manor Road Station on the line from Birkenhead Hamilton Square through to West Kirby, the line originates from the Hoylake & Birkenhead Railway in the 1840s, this station however opened in 1940 not long after the line was electrified in 1938. However the station it’s self again is NOT the least used on Merseyrail, it had 293,490 Passengers in 2024/25 90,000 more than in 2022/23 quarter which is impressive. If you divide 293,490 by 365 days you get 804 Passengers per day.

Now where getting the the lesser used stations on the network from Manor Road station I am now taking you too Bank Hall station the first stop heading towards Southport on the Northern Line, this station really feels like a lesser used station as I have been stood on the with 226,404 passengers in 2024/25, I got these stats from the ORR Website, if you divided that by 365 you get 719 Passengers per day, so where getting closer now!

Bank Hall Station – 226,404at
Capenhurst Station – 206,002

Our next contender is Capenhurst Station on the line from Hooton to Chester. You might think this is a serious contender for the least used station on the Merseyrail Network due to its secluded location. However, this station still serves over 200,000 passengers. If you divide 206,002 by 365 days, you get an average of 565 passengers per day at Capenhurst.

From Capenhurst, we are heading to our next least used station on the Merseyrail Network, which was indeed the official least used station on the entire network: Aughton Park. This is due to its not-so-disabled-friendly access, as it is located in a rather deep cutting. It is also one of my favourite stations on the network, with its wonderfully high road bridge and the forest-like area it provides. Aughton Park had 185,634 passengers, and if you divide that by 365, you get 508.5 passengers per day.

Aughton Park Station – 185,634
Little Sutton Station – 184,024
Little Sutton Station

Finally, the least used station on the entire Merseyrail Network is now Little Sutton station, with 184,024 passengers between 2024/25, replacing the previous contender, Aughton Park, which had less than 170,000 passengers in 2022/23. Little Sutton is a quaint little station with a lovely station building that is sadly no longer in use. The platforms are lengthy and can accommodate up to 8 carriages. If you divide that by 365, you get 504 passengers per day.

And with that, we have reached the end of this adventure focusing on seven stations on the Merseyrail Network. We have counted from the least used on each line of the network: Headbolt Lane, Ormskirk, Southport, Chester, Ellesmere Port, New Brighton, and West Kirby. If you would like me to do a feature on the most used stations on the network, please do let me know; I would really appreciate it.
