Beginning my day at Chester Railway Station, I am visiting every station on Merseyrail’s Wirral Line between Chester and Liverpool James Street. This line was originally part of the Great Western Railway network before pregrouping in the early to mid-1900s, before British Rail took over. From Chester, I made my way down the line to my first station, Eastham Rake. From there, I decided to visit Capenhurst Station to make things easier for me in the future.

Leaving Capenhurst, I headed down the line to Bromborough Station. From there, I boarded a train bound for Bache, the final stop before Chester. However, I’ll only fully explore Chester once we’ve covered all the lines like the Mid Cheshire, Shrewsbury and the Helsby line. From Bache Station, I took the next train to Spital Station. The old GWR station design is particularly striking here and even at Bromborough.

From Spital Station, I continue up the line to the next station, Bromborough Rake. There are two stations with “Rake” in the name: Eastham Rake and Bromborough Rake. I quite like Bromborough Rake station as it is a relatively new addition, having opened in 1988 under British Rail, making it non-original to the line under GWR and LMS before and after grouping. From Bromborough Rake, I skip Spital and head towards Rock Ferry before continuing to Bebington.

From Bebington, I initially decided to catch the bus. However, on the day I chose this route, there were roadworks taking place opposite the station, making it difficult for buses to pick up passengers. Consequently, there was unfortunately a diversion that day. In the end, I decided to catch the train to Green Lane Station and then make my way to Birkenhead Central.

Starting from Bebington station, we journey deep into the heart of Birkenhead, stopping at Rock Ferry, Green Lane, and then Birkenhead Central. I then take the train from Birkenhead Central to my next stop, Green Lane, before proceeding to my penultimate station, Hamilton Square. From there, I head around the loop and conclude my day at Liverpool James Street Station. I plan to revisit Hunts Cross to Ormskirk in a future post, so stay tuned.

From Green Lane, I head to my penultimate station, Hamilton Square, before continuing towards Liverpool James Street, the end of the line. However, the train continues back towards Chester after going around the Loop. I mentioned earlier that I will be visiting Liverpool Central and Moorfields in a future post on the line from Hunts Cross to Ormskirk via Liverpool Central, so watch this space.

Starting from Hamilton Square, I make my way around the loop, concluding my adventure at Liverpool James Street Station by the waterfront and Liverpool One Shopping Centre. I am excited to return to the railway network and hope you will continue to join me as I rebuild this blog and regain my audience.

In 2026, James Street and Hamilton Square stations will be celebrating 140 years of service since their opening in 1886. These are among the oldest deep-level railway stations in the UK and possibly in the world. The tunnels beneath Birkenhead and the city are quite impressive, constructed using brick and by hand, as they didn’t have the technology we have today, such as the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) used for HS2 and the Elizabeth Line. However, I will see you on the next adventure coming soon!
