In this post I visit stations between Hooton & Ellesmere Port, this is a rather short line comprising two stations Little Sutton & Overpool with Ellesmere Port being the terminus. However the line does continue through to Helsby with Ince & Elton the only intermediate station after Stanlow & Thornton closed a few years ago. I started my trip at Hooton station the main station for services from Chester & Ellesmere Port making there way towards Liverpool.

From Hooton, I took my first train to Overpool, the newest station on the line, which opened in 1988. Overpool is a rather basic stop featuring just two platforms with shelters and a ticket machine. It feels quite minimal compared to Ellesmere Port and Little Sutton, both of which still retain their original station buildings. I really enjoy this railway line and look forward to visiting more stations throughout August.

I didn’t have long at Overpool Station before catching my next train to Little Sutton station which is also the Least Used Station on the Merseyrail network. I already have a post talking about lesser used stations which you can find here! However focusing more on Little Sutton, it also features a best kept station award from 2012, theirs quite a few on the Wirral Line, for example theirs one at Wallasey Grove Road, four at Meols station too.

From Little Sutton, I took my final train to Ellesmere Port on unit 777049. This was the first unit introduced back in 2023. I remember riding this same train back then and interviewing David Powell, whom I’ve spoken with on several occasions! However upon arriving into Ellesmere Port you get the sense that the station isn’t as widely used unlike the rest of the network, I rather like this station as it has a lot of the original features like at Little Sutton, it also features a Semefore Signal which is really cool as the Helsby line is still operated by a Manned signal box!
