In this post, I am at Ilkley Bus Station, which is located directly alongside Ilkley Railway Station and provides a really useful connection between bus and rail services for passengers travelling around the area, including towards Leeds, Bradford and Ilkley itself. Ilkley is situated within the Bradford district, not too far from Leeds City Centre, and the bus station is conveniently positioned right next to the railway station, making it easy to connect between the two modes of transport. I have already visited a number of the stations around Bradford Foster Square, as well as the stations along the railway line towards Ilkley, which is why I decided to take some time during my trip on Friday 11th September 2026 to check out the bus station here at Ilkley. It was interesting to see how the bus and railway stations work together, and although this wasn’t specifically a railway station visit for my Every Station challenge, it was a nice opportunity to explore another transport interchange and see what Ilkley has to offer.

In this post, I am at Ilkley Bus Station, which is located directly alongside Ilkley Railway Station and provides a really useful connection between bus and rail services in the area. The location of the bus station makes it particularly convenient for passengers travelling between Ilkley, Bradford and Leeds, with the railway station providing direct rail connections towards Leeds and Bradford Forster Square. Ilkley itself is within the Bradford district and is situated not too far from Leeds City Centre, making it a popular place for both commuters and visitors. I always find it interesting to see how different forms of public transport connect with each other, and having the bus and railway stations practically next door to one another makes this a really good example of a simple and convenient transport interchange.

I have already visited a number of the stations around Bradford Forster Square, as well as the stations along the railway line towards Ilkley, so during my trip on Friday 11th September 2026, I decided to take some time out to explore the bus station here at Ilkley. Although this wasn’t specifically a railway station visit as part of my Every Station challenge, it was still a worthwhile stop and gave me the opportunity to explore another part of the local transport network. I also wanted to see what the bus station was like and how well it connects with the railway station, particularly as I had already spent time exploring the railway line itself. It was a nice little addition to my trip and another opportunity to experience the different ways of getting around this part of West Yorkshire.

There isn’t a huge amount of bus activity here at Ilkley Railway Station & Bus Interchange, and during the 40 minutes I had to wait for my train towards Bradford Forster Square, I only saw a handful of buses coming and going. Despite that, I was still pleasantly surprised by the variety of vehicles that I did manage to see during my short stay. One of the highlights for me was spotting some of the older Wright Eclipse buses still operating on local services around the area, including services towards places such as Keighley, which was quite interesting to see as these older buses are becoming less common in many parts of the country. I also spotted a smaller minibus at the bus station, which added a little more variety to the vehicles on display. The main operator around Ilkley and the wider Bradford area is First Bus, while Arriva is another major operator across the wider region, particularly on services towards Leeds. Although my visit was relatively short, there was still enough going on to make the bus interchange an interesting little stop before continuing my journey by train.

The idea behind this series is to simply document and explore the many different Bus Stations and Interchanges found across the UK! I have already got a wide variety of posts focusing on bus stations from different parts of England, and I am now starting to venture further afield into Scotland and Wales too. This trip is my first proper venture into visiting several different Bus Stations across West Yorkshire, starting here at Ilkley, where the Bus Station is located directly alongside the Railway Station. Although it is a relatively small interchange, it provides an important connection between bus and rail services, with buses serving destinations including Leeds, Bradford, Keighley and the surrounding areas. It was interesting to see how a smaller town like Ilkley combines its bus and railway services together, making it a convenient interchange for passengers travelling around West Yorkshire.

I also have some more posts coming from the wider West Yorkshire area, including local Bus Hub posts from both the City of Leeds and Bradford, where I will be able to explore some much larger and busier transport interchanges. Bradford Interchange is particularly interesting as it combines both bus and railway services in one location, while Leeds has a much larger city bus station serving a wide variety of destinations across West Yorkshire and beyond. I am also going to be in Sheffield on Monday 14th September, although my main focus will be visiting stations between Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds as part of my Every Station challenge, before eventually making my way back home towards Liverpool. I am really enjoying expanding this series beyond Merseyside and getting the opportunity to experience how different towns and cities across the UK operate their bus networks, with plenty more Bus Stations and Interchanges still to explore!

The facilities here at Ilkley are fairly basic, but they provide everything you would expect from a small Bus Station and Interchange. There are standard bus shelters for passengers to wait in, along with white dot-matrix information displays rather than the more traditional orange displays, which I actually find much easier to read, especially during the evening or in darker conditions. I also like the fact that, despite Ilkley being a relatively small Bus Station, there are next-stop information displays available to passengers, giving you useful information about where the bus is heading and the stops along the way. Timetables are also provided at each Bus Stand, which is something I always think is important as a backup in case the electronic displays are faulty or aren’t working for whatever reason. There are also a few shops and other facilities nearby, including a bar and an M&S located within the Railway Station itself, with the entrance to M&S being inside the main station building. Overall, while Ilkley doesn’t have the extensive facilities you would find at a much larger city Bus Station, I think it has a good selection of useful passenger facilities for a smaller interchange.

One final note before I bring this post to an end, Ilkley is a rather interesting Railway Station when you look at the history of the railway line itself. The line once continued further towards Skipton, with Ilkley previously having through services in that direction before the railway connection was eventually closed. Some of the destinations that are no longer directly served by rail are now covered by bus services, giving passengers alternative ways of getting around the area, with services operating to various destinations including York on Saturdays. The main destinations I noticed during my visit were Keighley, Leeds and Bradford Interchange, providing some useful connections across West Yorkshire and beyond.
